In 60 minutes, Fred Haskett shows you how to hand decisions to people you trust, so the list that needs you gets shorter while the decisions on it get bigger.
Hosted by Fred Haskett43 years in lawn, landscape, and tree care
- Nov 4Wednesday, live on Zoom
- 12 noonCentral time, 1 PM Eastern
- 60 minwith live Q&A with Fred at the end
- $1M to $5Mthe owners this session is built for
It is 11 o’clock at night, and you are building tomorrow’s route schedule. Again.
You have managers. You have procedures. And every question still finds its way back to you, because somewhere along the way you decided nobody could do it as well as you.
Here is the uncomfortable part: you are right. Nobody cares about this company the way you do. But that belief is also the ceiling. Somewhere between $3 and $5 million, the business gets more complex than one person can decide for, and most owners never get past it.
And the bill comes due later. When you want to sell, a buyer pays less for a company that only works with you in it.
What the owners who get through it do differently
They keep the decisions that are theirs
They keep the 10 or 15 decisions only an owner should make, and hand off the rest.
They give real authority
They give a few people real authority, and stop second-guessing them.
They don’t hire copies of themselves
They hire people who are good at what they are not, instead of copies of themselves.
They run on a scorecard and a rhythm
They run the company on a scorecard and a weekly rhythm, so accountability does not depend on the owner remembering to ask.
Sixty minutes. Everything you have been meaning to fix.
Fred has spent 43 years inside lawn, landscape, and tree care companies. Here is what he is opening up on the call.
-
Decisions
Where decisions live
- The “owner interference test” that shows you, in three questions, which of your managers you have quietly stripped of authority.
- The 10 or 15 decisions that will always belong to you, and why that list gets shorter while every decision on it gets bigger.
- How to sort every decision in your company into four levels, so only the fourth one ever reaches your desk.
- What never to do when a manager brings you a problem. Do it once and you have taught the entire company to bring you the next one.
- When to say nothing at all: the five questions that replace your answers and build managers instead of dependency.
-
People
Who you hire, and why
- Your best technicians get better results because they are better technicians, right? Wrong. Here is what they are actually carrying that the others are not.
- Why your first few hires should look nothing like you. Fred learned this one the hard way.
- If you have ever hired more people and watched complaints go up instead of down, this session explains exactly what happened.
-
Accountability
What makes a standard stick
- Why writing more SOPs has never once fixed this, and what actually enforces a standard after it is written down.
- Do you know which number your leadership team would say you avoid looking at? Fred is going to ask you to name it.
- The 30-minute weekly meeting that does more for execution than any software you will buy this year.
-
The payoff
What it is worth, and your first 90 days
- What a buyer sees when your company only works with you in it, and what that does to the price when you sell.
- The 90-day install, broken into days 1 to 30, 31 to 60, and 61 to 90, so you leave with a plan instead of a page of notes.

This session is for owners who are done being the bottleneck
This is for you if
- You own a lawn care, landscape, or tree care company doing roughly $1M to $5M a year.
- You have managers in place, and you are still the one making most of their decisions.
- You have caught yourself thinking nobody can do it as well as you.
- You have written procedures that nobody follows the same way twice.
- Your phone starts before 8 AM with questions only you seem able to answer.
- You want to grow next year, and you already suspect the constraint is you, not the market.
- You are willing to look at your own behavior before you write another employee rule.
Probably not for you if
- You are still the only person doing the work. Come back when you have managers to hand decisions to.
- You are looking for a software demo. There is nothing to buy on this call.
- You want someone to confirm the problem is your people.

Not feeling alone at the top
10 owners who have spent years in Fred’s Leaders’ Peer Groups.
Our company has been transformed since we joined the Leaders’ Peer Group 4 years ago. Every aspect of our company has seen a change for the better. I only wish we joined many years ago.
